    Reviews

More and more nasty comedies -- whether about romance (the terribly foul "Love Stinks"), music ("Detroit Rock City") or something altogether different -- have been vying to topple Bobby and Peter Farrelly's "Kingpin" and "There's Something About Mary" from the top of the bad-taste throne.

Most of the contenders are unredemptive, vile treatises on the worst sides of human nature.

The latest entry, "Drowning Mona," scores high on nastiness, but it has as many surprisingly funny moments as offensive ones.

The film, directed by Nick Gomez, reunites Danny DeVito (whose company also produced the film) and Bette Midler, who starred in the 1986 hit "Ruthless People."

Mona Dearly (Midler) is the most foul-mouthed, ill-tempered resident of Yerplanck, N.Y., a town full of white trash, Yugo drivers and bad haircuts. When her Yugo goes off a cliff and sinks into the lake, drowning the much-loathed woman, the whole community celebrates. "I bet property values go up," chortles one, while another quips, "I've seen people more upset at losing change in a candy machine."

Nevertheless, Police Chief Rash (DeVito) is called in to investigate what appears to be a routine accident. But he soon learns the car's brakes were sabotaged and the death was actually murder. But since everyone either hated and/or feared Mona, he's got scads of suspects.

They include Mona's dumb-as-a-post, one-handed son Jeff (Marcus Thomas), her cheating husband Phil (William Fichtner), diner waitress Rona Mace (Jamie Lee Curtis) and, at the top of the list, young Bobby Calzone (Casey Affleck). Bobby is Jeff's landscaping business partner and harbors serious grudges against both Mona and her ineffectual, lazy, beer-swilling son, who is about to drive Bobby to bankruptcy. But Bobby is about to be married to Rash's beloved daughter Ellen (Neve Campbell), who has her own reasons to dislike Mona and Jeff.

"Drowning Mona" sifts through the convoluted lives and relationships of this group of misfits and, for its first two-thirds, is quite funny and involving. But like most movies these days, it doesn't quite know how to tie up its loose ends and settles more for convenience than ingenuity.

    Did you know...?

  • 'Mona Dearly' is an anagram for "only a dream".

  • On the DVD commentary, Nick Gomez (director) states that Bette was actually in the coffin featured in the scenes at the Funeral Parlour, blindfolded.
